Introduction to Applique: Around the Holly — Two-Day Class, October 15 & 16

Learn machine applique by making something you will put out every December. Over two days, Faye teaches raw-edge applique using Around the Holly by Jenice Belling of Quilted Garden Designs — a 32-inch holly-and-berry round that finishes as either a Christmas table topper or a tree skirt. The pattern includes directions for both, so you decide which one you are making.

The technique here is appli-quilt: the applique stitching and the quilting happen in the same pass. It sounds like a shortcut and it is, but it is also genuinely the nicer way to do this — no wrestling a finished top under the machine afterward, and the stitching that holds your shapes down is the same stitching that quilts the piece.

Over the two days you will work through preparing and positioning shapes, layering the holly and berries so they go down in the right order, handling the curves and points that give people trouble, choosing thread and stitch settings that suit the look you want, and finishing the outer edge of a round piece.

Paper templates and full written directions come with the pattern, so you leave with everything you need to make it again.

What to bring: your sewing machine in good working order, or use a shop machine at no extra charge. A full supply list, including the pattern and fabric requirements, goes out when you register. We stock the pattern and can help you pull fabrics in the shop.

Skill level: Confident beginner. You should be comfortable running your machine and sewing a straight seam. No applique experience needed.

Registration & Cancellation

Seats are limited to 6 so everyone gets hands-on time, and we need at least 3 registered for a class to run. Your seat is confirmed once payment is received.

• 7+ days before class — full refund to your original payment method.
• Fewer than 7 days — store credit for the full amount, good on anything in the shop. You're also welcome to send someone in your place; just call and give us their name.
• No-shows without notice are not eligible for a refund or credit.
• If we cancel for low enrollment or weather — full refund, or move your seat to the next session, your choice.
• If a class fills, call and ask to be added to the waiting list. When we have three waiting, we add a second session.
